This summer, my most exciting adventure related to disability ministry awareness was attending the June General Assembly of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Memphis, Tennessee. I had signed myself up to host an informal networking lunch with only an hour to share about doing something for our disabled brothers and sisters in our churches.
Little did I know when I signed up that there were others keen to have this same conversation at this event as well! The host church had a lunch on another day, there was a guest from Matthew’s Ministry speaking on the main floor, AND Michael Jr’s comedy act was loaded with stories involved those with disabilities. A healthy number attended my lunch presentation and I left that event knowing that God was going to do something wonderful with the experiences.
I have been a constant presence at our PMA quarterly meetings since January 2017. Each time I set up my table, I hear at least two or three new stories of challenges and a wish for different outcomes. Each story is proof positive of the important of this conversation and our need to do things differently.
It will take time, much prayer, and ceaseless work. Please join me in praying for every PMA church to explore how God is calling them to seek our the poor, the maimed, the lame, and the blind in their communities.
