There are so many scripture to reinforce this concept. Here I present three “tables” for your consideration:
The King’s table – King David and Mephibosheth – 2 Samuel 9
Mephibosheth was lame in both feet. We are told this numerous times. His attitude toward himself could apply even today. Yet we see the King honoring Mephibosheth and welcoming him to his royal table because of his birthright.
The Picnic table – Luke 14:12-14
Jesus himself tells us not to invite our friends when we have a dinner or banquet. Instead we should invite the poor, crippled, lame, blind. Those cannot repay their host. And we will be blessed because they cannot repay us.
The Banquet table – Luke 14:16-24
This table is a bit different than the others. The parable Jesus teaches tells us that those whom were invited to the great banquet were all too busy to attend. And so the master of the house became angry and sent his servant out to bring in the poor, crippled, blind, and lame. And the servant was sent out yet again to compel even more to come in so that his house would be full.
WE have to compel those who are poor, crippled, lame, and blind to come into our houses of worship. Many have been told they are not welcome. They are outcast and have been confined to the shadows of our society.
“When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”
Matthew 9:36-38
